Geological Guide to Eastbourne

(Eastbourne) - 2003

From the cliffs near the Groynes, the chalk is a mixture of Middle, New Pit Chalk, the Lewes Chalk Junction, Middle, The Upper Chalk Boundary and Lower Zig-Zag Chalk of the Plenus Marls. As you walk further along towards Cow Gap, the beds change and exposures of Gault & Upper Greensand can be seen. The chalk zones here are of the Clauconitic Marls of the West Melbury Marly Chalk with the Zig Zag Chalk including the Plenus Marls still present at the upper part of the cliff.
